The same grant program that created the Regional Extension Centers, also created a consortium of Community Colleges to train the workers needed to fill the thousands of health care information technology jobs the program is expected to create. Funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, two community colleges are offering programs that will train these workers to support the further adoption of health information technology in clinical settings across Maine.
Southern Maine Community College is offering two six-month certificate programs provided in an online format. Certificates will include: Technology/Engineering to prepare workers to install, maintain and support EHR systems; and Analyst/Consultant to prepare workers to analyze and/or reorganize a provider's workflow so that health IT systems are being used to their full potential to achieve meaningful use. Kennebec Valley Community College is offering two six-month, non-credit certificate programs in Electronic Health Records Training for those with a background in Healthcare or Information Technology. The certificate programs are being delivered online and in lab formats and include EHR Consultant and EHR Engineer. For more information on the program click here.
In support of this program and ONC, HIMSS has developed a health information technology jobs page.
